Java Architect

It's a 6 month contract in the City Centre. Daily rates (depending on experience, but very attractive)

Essential - Soft Skills
Gets things done e.g. a finisher.
Self-starter and must be able to work with little or no supervision.
Good oral and written communications.
Is interested in technology, is motivated to stay current, has broad technical knowledge, interests and experience.
Ability to communicate clearly with client and other teams and to use appropriate communication style for the audience in hand.


Essential – Technical Skills / Experience
A minimum of 10 years development and design experience and has experienced the entire development cycle: Requirements gathering, Analysis, Design; Test and Implementation.
Strong JEE experience in a variety of situations and implementations.
Comes from a solid C/C++ background
Should be able to read code in a variety of languages and should have experience in several programming languages, technologies, frameworks and Operating Systems
UNIX (Solaris preferably) experience
Proven ability to analyse problem areas, form solution directions, guide client in solution selection and select and produce appropriate architectural artefacts.
Proven ability to drive/manage solutions through all phases of design, implementation and test.
Proven ability to produce and review analytical/design documentation for consumption by clients/managers and other teams.

Desirable - Technical Skills / Experience
Experience of a variety of architectures, especially3-tier and Client/Server architectures, especially JEE/J2EE on WebLogic and Tomcat/Axis
Experience with JMS, EJB, JSP and some JEE Application server (BEA Web Logic and / or Apache Tomcat preferably)
Working knowledge of XML and related.

Advantageous – Technical Skills / Experience
UNIX shell scripting, and MAKE etc. would be highly desirable.
Some COBOL experience (or even an understanding) would be advantageous.
Web Services and allied technologies and standards, including ESB, BPM and SOAP.
Database (Ingres if possible) experience would be advantageous.
An understanding and the of software development, change management and release management processes (experience of several different approaches over the years would be highly desirable). The ability to articulate and advise on these topics.
XML, XML Schema (XSL), DOM and SAX using JAXP.
Team leadership (size doesn’t matter).
Experience of Eclipse IDE.
Has used CVS or some other source code management.
Understanding of OpenRoad/Tuxedo would be the icing on the cake.

Desirable - Soft Skills
Personable and friendly, is able to work with people and able to reach consensus.
Experience of Public Service or any large body e.g. banking etc. would be useful but in no way essential.


In summary, they need an architect and senior developer, with >10 years broad experience, (with the emphasis on C and Java) in the trenches.
